The real reason your marketing isn't working
If your marketing isn't producing results, the problem is rarely the tactics. Here's what's actually going wrong — and how to fix it.
STRATEGY FIRST
The real reason your marketing isn't working
You've tried different things. Different platforms, different types of content, maybe ads. You've spent money and time. And yet — the needle isn't moving the way it should.
The instinct, at this point, is usually to try something else. A new platform. A different format. Another tool.
But the problem is almost never the tactic. It's what's underneath the tactic — or more precisely, what isn't there.
The tactical trap
When marketing isn't working, it's tempting to treat it as a tactics problem. If Instagram isn't working, try TikTok. If organic isn't working, try paid.
Sometimes that's the right call. But more often, switching tactics without fixing the underlying issue just means running the same problem on a different platform.
The underlying issue is almost always one of three things: unclear positioning, the wrong audience, or a disconnect between what the marketing says and what the business delivers.
Reason 1: Your positioning isn't clear
If someone lands on your website or your Instagram — can they immediately understand what you do, who you do it for, and why you're different? If people can't quickly understand why you're the right choice for them, they move on.
You can't out-execute a strategy problem. Better tactics on top of a weak foundation don't build anything that lasts.
Reason 2: You're talking to the wrong people
Marketing that's trying to reach everyone effectively reaches no one. If your content is getting impressions but not converting, the most likely explanation is an audience problem. You're reaching people — just not the right people.
The fix isn't to broaden the message. It's to narrow it.
Reason 3: The message doesn't match the reality
Sometimes marketing isn't working because what the marketing promises and what the business delivers are out of alignment. More marketing isn't the answer here — better alignment is.
How to diagnose which problem you have
Could someone describe your business clearly after one visit to your website?
Can you describe your ideal client in specific enough detail that you'd recognise them?
When your best clients describe why they chose you, does it match what your marketing says?
Are you getting the wrong kind of enquiries, or no enquiries at all?
Getting the wrong enquiries suggests an audience or messaging problem. Getting no enquiries suggests a positioning or reach problem.
What to actually do
Before you change the tactics, spend time on the foundation. Clarify your positioning. Define your audience with real specificity. Make sure what you're promising is something you can actually deliver.
Then — and only then — evaluate whether your tactics need to change. Often, once the foundation is right, the tactics that weren't working start to work. Because the problem was never the execution. It was the direction.
